Top 10 Viewpoints in Mexico

Mexico's viewpoint geography is as broad as the country itself: from the cenote-pierced limestone shelf of the Yucatán Peninsula to the high volcanic plateau of the central interior, from the Sonoran desert in the north to the rainforest of Chiapas in the south. The list below picks ten that together sketch the country's range — volcano, jungle, desert, coast and one Aztec-era urban summit.

1. Popocatépetl viewpoint, Paso de Cortés

The viewpoint at Paso de Cortés between Popocatépetl (5,393 m) and Iztaccíhuatl (5,230 m) gives a front-row view of both volcanoes. Popocatépetl is active; the viewing distance is set by current alert status.

2. Cenote Ik Kil viewpoint, Yucatán

The cenote-edge viewing platform looking down into the open-roof cave pool 26 m below. The aerial roots of trees hang to the water surface. Best in late morning when the sun reaches the floor.

3. Pyramid of the Sun summit, Teotihuacán

The largest pyramid in the Americas (65 m) gives a panoramic view across the entire ancient city — Avenue of the Dead, Moon Pyramid, surrounding mountains. The summit climb (248 steps) takes 10 minutes.

4. Copper Canyon — Divisadero

The viewing platform on the Copper Canyon railway, near Divisadero in Chihuahua. The canyon system is larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The ziplines and via ferrata add an adventure layer; the basic viewpoint is free.

5. Cerro de la Bufa, Zacatecas

The hill above the colonial silver city of Zacatecas, with a viewpoint, chapel and the funicular's upper station. The view shows the dense colonial centre and the surrounding semi-arid mountains.

6. Monte Albán, Oaxaca

The Zapotec mountaintop city dating to 500 BC, with a Main Plaza at 1,940 m. The platforms give views over the Valley of Oaxaca — Tlacolula, Etla, Zimatlán. Best in early morning light.

7. Tepoztlán — Tepozteco viewpoint

The pyramid-temple on the cliff above Tepoztlán in Morelos. The climb is steep but short (45 minutes). The cliff-edge view over the colonial town below is the canonical shot.

8. Mirador Hierve el Agua, Oaxaca

The petrified-waterfall viewpoint at Hierve el Agua, with mineral terraces that look like cascades. Pool-edge bathing adds to the experience. The road in is unpaved; arrive by 4WD or guided tour.

9. Acapulco — La Quebrada cliff divers

The viewing terrace above La Quebrada, where the cliff divers of Acapulco have jumped from a 35-metre rock into a narrow sea channel since 1934. The viewpoint is from the Hotel Mirador opposite. Five dives per evening.

10. Sumidero Canyon — Mirador del Roca, Chiapas

The viewpoint above Sumidero Canyon shows the 1,000 m drop to the Grijalva river below. The Mirador del Roca and Mirador La Coyota together give multiple angles. Boat trips from Chiapa de Corzo show the canyon from below.

Elevation and altitude

Many Mexican viewpoints sit above 2,000 m, and the central plateau (Mexico City, Puebla) is itself at 2,200 m. Visitors should allow a day to acclimatise before attempting volcano viewpoints above 3,000 m.
