Top 10 Viewpoints on the Côte d'Azur
The Côte d'Azur is the 150-kilometre French Riviera between the Italian border and Marseille, with the Mediterranean to the south and the Maritime Alps rising directly behind. These ten viewpoints cover the coast from Menton to Cassis, with most concentrated between Nice and Monaco.
1. Èze Jardin Exotique — 429 m
A cactus and succulent garden on the ruins of a medieval castle, perched on a vertical cliff above the Mediterranean. The viewing terrace looks south over Cap Ferrat and east to Monaco. Reached by steep village climb or by road. Best at golden hour.
2. La Turbie Trophée d'Auguste — 480 m
A Roman monument celebrating Augustus's Alpine campaign of 6 BC. The terrace below the trophy looks south over Monaco and the principality of Monaco's port. Drive-up plus short walk.
3. Mont Boron, Nice — 191 m
The hill east of Nice's port with a paved walking path to a summit viewpoint over the Bay of Angels (Promenade des Anglais) and the Mediterranean. Drive-up plus 10-minute walk. Best at sunset.
4. Phare de la Garoupe, Cap d'Antibes — 78 m
The lighthouse on Cap d'Antibes with views east to the Alpes-Maritimes peaks and west to the Estérel. The Notre-Dame de la Garde chapel adjacent. Drive-up; short paved path.
5. Calanque d'En-Vau, Cassis — 50 m
The most-photographed of Cassis's calanques (limestone fjord inlets). The clifftop trail above gives a vertical view down into the turquoise inlet between white cliffs. One-hour walk from the Calanque de Port-Miou trailhead.
6. Pointe Sublime, Verdon Gorge — 800 m
Inland from the Côte d'Azur but routinely visited from the coast. The viewpoint over the entrance to the 700-metre-deep Verdon Gorge, with the river visible far below. Drive-up.
7. Cap Ferrat lighthouse — 50 m
The southernmost tip of Cap Ferrat with a coastal path circuit (10 km) giving views back to Nice, east to Monaco, and south over the open Mediterranean. The Villa Ephrussi Rothschild gardens are nearby.
8. Mont Faron, Toulon — 583 m
A bunker-topped hill above Toulon, reached by funicular or road. The view over Toulon's military port — France's principal Mediterranean naval base — and the Hyères archipelago offshore.
9. La Garde-Freinet, Massif des Maures — 425 m
The ruined castle above the village of La Garde-Freinet in the Massif des Maures. Views over the cork-oak forests of the Maures and south to the Saint-Tropez peninsula. Short hike from the village.
10. Notre-Dame de la Garde, Marseille — 162 m
The basilica overlooking Marseille and the Mediterranean, with a 360-degree panorama from the church terrace. Drive-up or steep stair climb from Marseille's Vieux-Port. The defining Marseille viewpoint.
